Chair classic made of metal & wood

The Standard Chair, made in 1934, belongs to the classic pieces of design history. The characteristic Vitra chair by Jean Prouvé is desired again today.

Inspired by the furniture competition for the Cité Universitaire of Nancy, Jeans Prouvé started to combine metal and wood in the 30s- He used the resistance of steel for the stability of the Standard Chair’s base. The backrest and the seat, parts that contact the user’s body, he made of shaped plywood.

Resilient chairl

The characteristic shape of the Prouvé Standard Chair came from one deciding idea: The load of a chair lies on the back feet, the weight of the body must be held there. That easy recognition was realized by the designer and constructor Jean Prouvé on an embossing way: while the less loaded front feet are made of a steel tube, the back feet of the Vitra Standard Chair are voluminous hollow bodies, porting the load they carry to the ground.

The Vitra Standard SP Chair is the modern edition of the chair classic of 1934: Vitra produces backrest and seat of plastic today. The quality of the Vitra Standard SP is shown in the convincing cleverness of its construction as well as in its aesthetics.

The Vitra Standard Chair is also still available in the classic edition with wooden backrests and seats.
