Pendant lamp made of bamboo and washi paper

Akari YP1 pendant luminaire from Vitra is a timeless luminaire in Far Eastern style. The lamp is made of bamboo and washi paper. The white, robust paper softens the light and spreads it gently and evenly. Thus the Akari YP1 is both decorative and practical over the dining table in the living room or over the bed in the bedroom.

The Akari Light Sculpture series consists of pendant luminaires and other table, floor and ceiling luminaires. The lamps have different shapes, are sometimes simple, sometimes experimental.

Akari Light Sculptures Series

Isamu Noguchi has designed more than 100 Akari lamps since 1951. The impetus for the design luminaires came from a visit to Japan.
"The light of an Akari shines like the light of the sun that is filtered through a Shoji paper. The magic of paper transforms the cool electricity back into the eternal light of the sun. So that their warmth can continue to fill our rooms at night." Isamu Noguchi

YouTube video for the production of an Akari lamp by Vitra

The video shows the production of an Akari lampshade in real time. In concentrated manual work, the individual shoji paper layers are applied to a wooden construction model and cut to fit exactly.
