Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams was born in 1932 in Wiesbaden. By his grandfather, who was master cabinetmaker, Rams soon met carpentry. However, he began studying in 1947 architecture and interior design, but interrupted this until 1951 to make his journeyman’s certificate as a joiner.

After focusing again on his studies, he graduated with distinction and initially worked in the Otto Apel architecture office, before he went to the Braun AG in 1955 to work as architect and interior designer. The name Dieter Rams is since then tightly connected to the Braun AG, not at last because he became product-design leader, in 1968 the director and 1988 even general authorized representative of the Braun AG.

Already since 1957, Dieter Rams designed furniture, among them some real classics, such as the famous Rams Shelf which is still produced by the sdr+GmbH & Co. KG. Moreover Dieter Rams practised different professorships, such as for industrial design at the University of Applied Arts, Hamburg.

Numerous expositions were dedicated to the designs and the life of Dieter Rams. Also Dieter Rams received numerous awards, among them for his life-work, the design award of the Federal Republic Germany 2007, and in the same year the Lucky Strike Designer Award of the Raymond Loewy Foundation.
