Fries & Zumbühl

The Swiss design team Fries & Zumbühl worked together since 2003. Behind the name there are also Jakob Zumbühl and Kevin Fries.

”While the studies melt to a common project, we fast discover that our very different working and thinking means a great enrichment for the project. The intense thoughts exchange, the argumentation and the opposite questioning reinforce the common decisions in design and realization. The casually emerged and unobtrusively loose cooperation became more intense in the past years and it prove itself again and again. We are excited about new projects and discourses – but especially about further common products, that are to come.”

They design products and concepts with formal independence – alone or also with future and design oriented companies.

”We see more than a formed material with a specific function in objects. Each object possesses an own identity and displays characteristics that may wake emotional connection in the user. A good product-man relationship enlarges the lifetime of a product and maybe also that one of the user. The relation to personal objects can get enormous, so that new products, despite of possibly better functions and more utility, won’t be loved as much as the predecessor.”

Jakob Zumbühl graduated at the University for Design and Art as industrial designer in 2003. During and after his employment as architect assistant at the ETH, he worked out furnishing concepts and furniture systems for atCaps Architects. Parallel to his time-jobs, he constantly followed own projects – whether alone or together with partners. His products were exposed in Zurich, Cologne, Milan and Paris – the lounger "Pachific" travels around the whole world since two years now with the Swiss Design Exposition Criss&Cross.

”We want to create products with an own identity and character that can be realized with more senses and with it offer more value. We create new and independent things that are different to other products because of their function, expression and emotion. Thoughts and designs in all three dimensions lead us to the most different approaches. The project-oriented knowledge of construction in new theme fields, the usage of materials and their characteristics, the curiosity of technologies and manufacturing processes interests and fascinates us again and again. That the user enjoys a product created by us is still our greatest approval and motivation.”
